A digital map of Europe has now been made available for download that was designed for motoring across the continent. This European navigation system is also suitable for hiking, cycling or even horse riding. The data is stored within the Garmin custom file format (GTF) and can be read by its line of mobile devices like GPS units, mobile PCS, and tablet PCs. This European navigational program offers features like offline storage of driving routes; real-time traffic updates; clear 3D graphics; accurate up-to-date mapping information on roads including street names, new addresses and changes in roadworks or new roads. The European Road Map comes with a range of detailed maps covering the continent – from Scandinavia to Turkey – and an A to Z index of all the major towns, cities and attractions. There are 5 different map options: The native maps can be installed on a computer but, for a more convenient experience, there is also an installer that will install everything within less than 2 minutes. In addition to the European Road Map, there is also a free offline-only city map available for download as well as some other 'zip files' containing various city maps across Europe. This saves on internet data usage as well as reducing on device storage space on your GPS unit or mobile device. The maps within the European Road Map are stored as a digital model. In other words, each part of the map is defined as a separate polygon. The shape of these polygons is created from thousands of laser scans divided into parts with different colours. The vertices or points, which define each polygon, can then be edited and refined to create smaller and smaller polygons all the way down to the level of individual buildings and human faces. This process – known as GIS – allows an unlimited amount of detail for every part of the model – roads, paths, rivers and mountains – without compromising anything about its overall appearance or readability. The accuracy levels used in researching and creating this digital model are very high. Roads and paths are 100% accurate and all human portraits and buildings come with a confirmed accuracy level of 95%. There are no borders or internal borders within the model which means that you can zoom in as close as possible without losing details. The European Road Map is also designed to work seamlessly with Garmin's other devices such as the GPSMAP, eTrex, eTrex Legend, eDGE series of GPS navigators, and the new Edge 710 cycling computer. The European Road Map will be available for download free of charge from Garmin's own website (and also for certain mobile phone networks) from early August 2008 – and will become an official part of their product line-up later in the year. There are currently no plans to release the European Road Map for use with other devices. However, there are plans to sell the European Road Map for use in countries where it is not available free of charge on Garmin's website. These could include markets where Garmin has a large number of distributors or retail outlets.Click on image above to download pro version of Europe Road Map 6.5The well known navigation program known as NMEA2000 is here updated with updated map data especially for Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and China.
